The Lapworth Museum of Geology is named after Charles Lapworth, the Professor of Geology and the forerunner of the Birmingham’s University and based at the territory of the University.
The Lapworth Museum of Geology has the extensive collections of graptolites, minerals, rocks and invertebrate fossils, equipment, models, photographic material, zoological specimens, stone axes, the Holcroft collection of Silurian and Carboniferous invertebrates and the Pleistocene insect collection, historical maps and documents. The collections are from variety of sources both in the UK, Midlands and indeed the world.
The collections contain in excess of 250 00 specimens. For example, mineral collection contains about 15 000 specimens, many of them rare and displaying stunning colours and crystal shapes.
The Lapworth Museum of Geology is famous for its fossils that lived 420 million years ago, when the area was covered by a shallow, warm, tropical sea that enabled a highly diverse ecosystem to develop.
The museum is one of the oldest specialist geological museums in the UK. Throughout its long history the museum has provided a variable resource for students, schools and colleges and anyone with an interest in learn about geology. Museum supports teaching and research in the Earth Sciences and natural history within University.
